How to Borrow Airtime from 9mobile, MTN, Glo & Airtel

Most of us have at one point in time stranded of airtime (have a zero credit balance). You might have money to purchase the airtime, but maybe nobody sell in your current location. It might also be because it is too late to go out and you need to make that important/urgent call. It for this reason that all Nigeria telecommunication companies (MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile) launch a platform that allow you to borrow airtime pending the time you were able to purchase a recharge card. Here is how to borrow credit on Glo, MTN, Airtel and 9mobile in 2021.

This platform has saved a lot of people’s live, job, contract  and am talking from experience. You can never run out of airtime again if you know how to purchase airtime from your mobile network/internet service provider. One odd thing (though understandable) about borrowing airtime from mtn, glo, airtel and 9mobile is that how much airtime you are allow to borrow depends on often you recharge monthly and how long you have been on the network.

One other important thing you should know is that the borrowed airtime or airtime borrowed will be deducted from your next recharge. So what do you say? let’s proceed to how you can borrow credit from glo, mtn, etisalat and airtel mobile networks in Nigeria.

How to Borrow Airtime on MTN Nigeria

MTN may tell you the service is available to all, but the truth is only subscribers that recharge at least 500 naira enjoy it most of the time.

Some lucky subscribers are able to borrow credit on mtn network without recharging close to N500 monthly.

To borrow credit from mtn , dial *606# and follow the prompt. Reply with 1 to check eligibility, 2 to request for airtime, 3 to check borrowed credit balance, 4 for your xtratime history, 5 to learn more about mtn xtratime and 6 to exit.

The minimum amount you can borrow is 50 naira and you will be charge 10% of the borrowed amount. If you borrow N100, you will be credited with 90 naira.

How to Borrow Airtime on Glo Nigeria

Before Glo can borrow you airtime, you must have been on their network for about 4 month. But again, there are lucky people out there that nobody says No to.

You can borrow up to the highest amount you have recharged since you activated your line/sim/number.

Dial *321*amount#. For example to borrow N500 from glo, dial *321*500#. You will be credited with 450 naira. They also removes 10% as service charges.

How to Borrow Credit on 9mobile Nigeria

To borrow credit from 9mobile network, dial *665*amount#. For example to borrow N1000 worth of airtime, dial *665*1000#.

They also incur a 10% bank charges. Meaning you will be credited 900 for that 1000 naira you requested for.

9mobile Nigeria might only borrow you airtime, if you have a N900 as your minimum recharge monthly.

How to Borrow Airtime on Airtel Nigeria

Just like Glo, you must be an active subscriber for about three month before you can borrow credit from airtel network. Also, you must load a minimum amount of 250 naira monthly.

Dial *500*amount# to request for airtime from airtel network. For example to borrow credit of like N100, dial *500*100#. You will be credited with 90 naira and N10 removed as service charges.

BE AWARE: There’s a new mobile money fraud scheme

Mobile money fraudsters, just like any other fraud schemers, adapt to changes as their previous methods get powerless. There’s a new and a more complicated way these mobile money fraudsters operate now.

They now usually work in twos: a sender of money and a network staff. They send a victim a message via SMS that the victim’s account has been credited with a certain amount of money.
The trick here is where the message may have come from. If you’re using MTN, such an alert, if genuine, will come from the usual “Mobile Money” sender name and no other sender. Plus, you’ll also know that the total amount of money you have in the account from the SMS, if it is genuine.
Shortly after the fake SMS hits you, a call will come from the purported sender telling you he made a wrong transfer and thus, he’s called the network to revert the transaction. He will go on to say the network has reverted the transaction but has blocked your mobile money account so they [the telco] will call you to rectify the issue.

First of all, why would a company block someone if some money mistakenly was sent to their account? Also, if they have reverted the mistaken transaction, why would you call me? Are you the telcom company?
Soon, a fake staff from the telco will also call you about your account being blocked and how to rectify it. He [the fake telco staff] will tell the victim to follow some procedure in order to unblock the account. Going further, it will get to a point that he will want you to enter your mobile money PIN. If you do this, you give out your secret PIN code which shouldn’t be known to anyone except yourself.
The takeaway from this point is if the account was blocked with my knowledge (or even if it’s something I did) why shouldn’t I be told to go to the nearest service centre in my location to rectify the issue (as it is always done)?
Also, when they tell you your mobile money account has blocked, try checking your balance to see if it has been really blocked. If it has been blocked, it is always safer to go to the nearest service centre of that network.

OPay, PalmPay and a long line of Chinese investor interests in Africa

The race to occupy Africa’s fintech space by foreign VC interests has never been more intense. This is following the unprecedented interest of Chinese investors in Africa’s most populous country and a company — OPay — taking center stage.

When OPay entered the Nigerian market, it quickly won the hearts of Nigerians with discounts and several other incentives. However, for some businesses, this wasn’t a good sign
OPay launched a bike-hailing service that aggressively acquired customers, included more services to its offering, grew agents network to over 140,000, and gave more discounts to the detriment of competitors.

It never really seemed there was going to be an OPay challenger until last week.
A date between Chinese investors
Last week PalmPay announced its launch in Nigeria with a $40 million investment to support its African activities. PalmPay is co-owned by Chinese-based Transsion Holdings and NetEase.
On the other hand, OPay, which is partly owned by Norway-based Opera and a Chinese group of investors, has raised over $170 million. Having secured the sum of $50 million for its launch, OPay secured an additional $120 million in a recent series B round.
Prominent Chinese investors associated with OPay are Sequoia Capital China, Source Code Capital, Meituan-Dianping, IDG Capital, and GSR Ventures.
Even though these investors represent China’s continued interest in Africa, the playing field will be different. In part, because, compared to its deal-making on infrastructure and commodities, very little of the Chinese-African engagement over the last decade has been focused on tech.
The paradigm shift
Now, there’s a paradigm shift towards Internet consumption. And given its ever-increasing demand, the Internet industry in Africa has tremendous potential.
The Chinese investors’ interest in Africa-focused businesses — like OPay and PalmPay — is an indicator of this paradigm shift.
For instance, Transsion Holdings and MediaTek are original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Transsion is the company behind the TECNO, Infinix, and Itel brands. Additionally, it boasts an array of Africa-focused apps, including short video-sharing platform, Vskit, and music streaming service, Boomplay.
MediaTek is the world’s fourth-largest global fabless semiconductor company, annually powering more than 1.5 billion TECNO, Itel, and Infinix devices, among others.
With platforms like Boomplay — reported to have more than 53 million African users — and Vskit, PalmPay should be able to leverage Transsion’s dominant network of TECNO, Infinix, and Itel devices to gain ground in Africa’s mobile and online payment space.

On the other hand, OPay’s investors will enjoy the first-mover advantage as far as Africa’s mobile and online payment is concerned.
Having been in the market longer, OPay has acquired many customers across a suite of products that includes bike, tricycle, quick loans, and food delivery.
The Opera browser, now belonging to a Chinese consortium following its sales for $600 million, is the fifth most popular desktop browser and holds a respectable 10% share of the mobile market. It is unlikely that the Opera browser won’t aid the drive for revenue in the fintech and to a lesser extent growth in advertising and search revenue.
Still, investors will savour growth potential in new opportunities beyond the browser; case in point is the news and content and classifieds divisions, Olist.
Treading a fine line
It will not be forgotten in a hurry that an investor like Sequoia China has a history of backing loss-making unicorns. A typical example is Sequoia China’s investment in the ride-hailing startup, Didi Chuxing which reportedly lost over $1.6 billion in 2018.
Another example is the Chinese super app, Meituan Dianping that went nine years before becoming profitable two months ago.
This Amazon-Esque profitless path to domination comes down to Meituan Dianping aggressively focusing on expansion over profitability. Careful examination of the OPay-connected investors shows there is an insatiable craving for super apps.
Many of these so-called super apps became the giants they are by aggressive customer acquisition strategies. Whether or not the sustainability of OPay’s business will be called into question for seemingly building towards a super app remains to be seen.
Needless to say, parallel events such as the purported shut down of bus division, OBus, and the over-the-top use of incentives to acquire customers makes it all the more frightening.
However, on the bright side, an investor like Meituan Dianping has managed to profit off a notoriously loss-making food delivery business. Its financial results for Q2 2019 show $3.17 billion in revenue and $56 billion in market cap. This means it has replaced Baidu as the third most valuable tech giant in China, only behind Alibaba and Tencent.
This coincides with the release of Uber’s Q2 numbers in both revenue and market cap, which reveal the US-based taxi-hailing company is still struggling to break-even.
Another positive development is the participation of Japan’s SoftBank Ventures in OPay series B round. As the only global early-stage venture arm of SoftBank Group, OPay’s investment is SoftBank Ventures’ first in Africa. SoftBank Ventures has stakes in Uber, Didi Chuxing, Slack, and WeWork, amongst others.
Still, nothing is certain
There is an impending competition between OPay and PalmPay, and this is down to the strong investor network of both sides.
Together, these Chinese-backed companies have the experience, finances, and network required to become dominant players in the African digital ecosystem. And although there’s no telling if the long-term gains would benefit Africans, enterprises connected to these startups across board are growing sales, able to cut procurement and logistics costs, and improve working capital turnover in the meantime.
There is also the argument that the trend is unleashing the potential of talents in Africa. 2019 is indeed a year Chinese investors have gone all-in on the continent’s startup scene. Yesterday it was OPay, today it is PalmPay. Which will it be tomorrow?

PoS Innovation Summit, 7th edition to focus on African Continental Free Trade Agreement

One of Africa’s leading e-payment companies, Global Accelerex, is set to host the 7th edition of its PoS Innovation Summit on December 11, 2019 at the Grand Ballroom of Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The theme of the event — The African Continental Free Trade Agreement: Driving Borderless Trade Through Fintech — seeks to highlight how AfCFTA can change the future of digital payments across Africa and provide stakeholders in the Nigerian payment system with information on how to maximise the boundless opportunities it presents. Experts in the digital payment ecosystem consider the move to accentuate this topic, which is on the front-burner of continental discourse, a bold step.
In a statement released by the company, the Managing Director, Tunde Ogungbade, stated that the summit couldn’t have come at a more opportune time as AfCFTA is expected to boost intra-African trade significantly, making Africa a single market of 1.2 billion people and a cumulative GDP of over $3 trillion.
According to Ogungbade, “AfCFTA provides a framework for trade liberalisation in goods and services. With this liberalisation comes an overarching need for trade settlements across different African countries, making payment an integral part of the process.
It therefore behoves digital payment companies to design innovative payment platforms and solutions that will facilitate these trade activities. Global Accelerex is already taking the lead in this regard and some of our innovative products will be hitting the market soon.”
The Special Guest of Honour at the event is the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Chief Niyi Adebayo. Acclaimed speakers and guest panelists who will draw from original insights and experiences to make the session engaging and interactive, have been lined up for the summit.
