Over Exposure To Phones, Computers & TV Screens Could Lead To Blindness

Chioma Uchendu, a consultant ophthalmologist with the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, has advised regular break from smartphones and other devices like computer and television screens to avoid damage to the eyesight.
Uchendu, who gave the advice in an interview with NAN in Umuahia on Friday, said that over-exposure to such devices could cause dry and allergic eyes.

She said that the blue-violet light peeking out from the screen was potentially harzardous to the eyes, and could lead to long-term problems, including blindness.
“It’s advisable to reduce ‘computer vision syndrome’, that is, feasting your eyes on a computer for a long time, because of the rays that come out from there, especially an LED computer, laptop or phone,” she said.
“Putting your eyes for a long time on a particular screen is not good because it can lead to symptoms of dryness in the eyes.
“Read for a while, at least for about 30 to 40 minutes, then remove your eyes from the screen for about five to six minutes so that you don’t end up with eye strain.”
She advised people who used glasses, including those that did not have refractive error, to use anti-glare glasses, and as recommended by an opthalmologist.
According to her, such glasses will protect the light rays from coming straight into the eyes.
The ophthalmologist also expressed worry over the growing eye problems world-wide, stressing that about 80 per cent of blindness were avoidable or treatable.
She, therefore, urged people to consult ophthalmologists regularly in order to know the condition of their eyes.

How To Plan & Prepare For Retirement In Nigeria

This article contains ways to prepare for retirement, retirement policy, life after retirement, retirement age, retirement benefits and everything you should know about retirement in Nigeria.

Most workers in Nigeria don't like the mention of the word 'retirement',the truth is that majority of Nigerians do not plan for their retirement on time and hence will feel unhappy whenever the issue of retirement is mentioned.

The plain truth is that if you plan meticulously for your retirement in Nigeria, the rest of your years will be an enjoyable one,you will have the chance and opportunity to pursue some other careers / ambitions or even travel to places you have dreamed of.

In this article we will list some practical steps that will help you to prepare for retirement in Nigeria.

How To Prepare For Retirement In Nigeria

1. Awareness

The difference between an individual that is enjoying his/her retirement period is the person that is aware that there will be a time when they won't be able to work again in life.

Most often young people do not think of retirement, they see it as a far away futuristic occasion, forgetting the fact that time flies, one of the the best ways to prepare and plan retirement is to have the awareness that one day you will wake up in the morning but wont be able to go to the office again, this will motivate you to start making calculated plans.

2.  Retirement Plans

After being aware that retirement is inevitable if your working in Nigeria, the next step is for you to plan and set  up a plan on how you want to enjoy your retirement.
This plan should contain blueprints on how you will take care of your health (health insurance),vacations, starting up a business Etc

3. Cost Estimation

Depending on the what you were earning as a worker and the type of lifestyle your accustomed to,you should be able to estimate the cost of retirement, this will also help you to make plans for retirement.
According to a research online, you should have up to  five -eight times the money you make in a year in your bank account, apart from your gratuity or remunerations.

4. Save

This one letter word will save you a lot of stress if you are able to actually ''save'' very well. Every month you should set aside an amount of money specifically for your retirement,in fact you should create a bank account for this and it should be automated.

Automated in the sense that every month your retirement money should be deducted from your salary.

And if possible the deducted retirement money should be kept in a fixed deposit account so that you won't be tempted to touch the money.

5. Investments

As your working, make sure you have a number of investments that will be able to generate cash for you.

Do not focus only on your current job,it's imperative that you have a side hustle.
You should consider investments in real estate, government bonds, treasury bills Etc which will be able to generate funds for you even after retirement.

6. Build Enthusiasm

That you have retired doesn't mean that you should be confiscated in one house, the best time in life is actually when you plan well and retire.

Even after retirement you should continue being productive and wake up each morning to a new challenge else you might end up developing an illness or dying early.

Consider opening a small business that is less strenuous but has the ability to generate cash such as catfish farming, raising broilers, rabbits or setting up a provision store.
Retirement in Nigeria shouldn't be dreaded but should be embraced as long as the necessary retirement plans and steps are put in place before retirement, retirees should still be filled with enthusiasm as they pursue a new goal or dream for the rest of their lives.

CareUEyes - Eye protection software, blue light filter for pc, screen dimmer, break reminder

Despite what the somewhat grammatically un-catchy title might suggest, CareUEyes is actually a nice little program designed to appeal to people who spend large parts of their lives sitting in front of computer screens.

The two main features of CareUEyes are the automatic blue light filter and a reminder to rest and take a break every once in a while. The combination of these two functions may help reduce eye strain caused by extended and prolonged use of computers. Put basically, it’s not a good idea to sit for hour after hour in front of a computer without any breaks, and this is where CareUEyes really stands out.
CareUEyes is only a small download but could have a large impact on your health.
The blue light filter and screen dimmer features work quite well, and changes automatically depending on the time. It works by gently adjusting the gamma value of your display, reducing the blue light part of the RGB spectrum. This makes your screen visibly dim as day turns to night and lessens the glare of your computer screen, helping you and your eyes to work longer.
By the same token, the Rest feature makes you take a default 3-minute break every 45 minutes, reminding you 30 seconds before the time is up and locking your screen, so you have to take a break. The break can be ‘snoozed’ for five minutes up to 3 times if you don’t want to break your train of thought.
One of the best features of CareUEyes however are the array of options. You can change the default break times with ease, choosing a default working time, and the length of time you want each break to last. By the same token, the blue light filter has five separate modes and color temperatures to choose from depending on the environmental settings you choose.
Key Features:
  • Protect eyes from screen glare.
  • Blue light filter.
  • Adjustable break times.
  • Lock screen timer to ensure you take a break.
  • Customisable options for light and timer features.
  • Helps you be more productive.
  • May help with your health.
  • May help with circadian and sleep patterns.
CareUEyes is shareware, and comes with a 15-day free trial. After that if you want to retain all the options you either have to buy a license, or to get a free license introduce 3 friends to CareUEyes via Facebook or Twitter.
